Awesome Apps to get during the Pandemic
Arinze Okigbo
During this COVID-19 pandemic, everyone is cooped up at home with little or nothing to do. Here are some excellent websites that you can go to for entertainment and learning purposes.
Education
1. Khan Academy
It is an online not-for-profit organization created by Salman Khan with tools to teach your children based on their grades and interests. It is motivational because users of the website are rewarded with badges and energy points when a course is completed or when the quiz questions are addressed correctly. . There are both tutorial and explainer videos on the site. Another perk is that the site is entirely free. I would highly recommend this site because I have used it and it is an enjoyable way to learn.
2. Duolingo
It is like Khan Academy, but for languages. I started using it this summer, and it is a great learning experience. I started learning French and, so far, I have learned a lot. J'adore le français. The site offers a total of 95 language courses in 38 languages. As of August 2020, the site has more than 300 million users worldwide. Some excellent features include a world-wide leaderboard that shows the ranking of the different users. Site users can learn more than one language at a time. The only disadvantage is that you have to pay for Duolingo Plus to get it ad-free. I would highly recommend Duolingo because I have used it, and it is an entertaining way to learn languages. Merci.
3. NitroType
It is an online typing game that helps improve your typing speed. The site allows you to race against other players by typing as fast as you can. It tells you how fast you type, and you earn money every time you race against other people. The money you earn while racing can be used to buy new cars in the garage. It is also preferable to the traditional Mavis Beacon created in 1987.
Entertainment
1. Afdah
It is a web-crawler that scours the internet for movies and TV shows. The website has free videos and TV shows that you can watch anytime and anywhere. I found out that movies that you would typically pay for on Netflix can be found free on Afdah. Overall, I feel that Afdah is a great site and I would recommend it.

Productivity

1. Grammarly
It is an application that can be downloaded as an app and used in your browser and other word processing software. It is a grammar checking application that uses AI to proofread your writing and ensure that you use proper punctuation, tenses, etc. The downside to Grammarly is that you have to pay for the Premium version, and I use it for all my writing. I’m using it to write this article.
